Lots of migration activity this week as the winter visitors to MCR have arrived at our feeders and around the property!

Dark-eyed Juncos, White-throated Sparrows, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Red-breasted Nuthatches and even a Common Loon are at MCR these days.

These species migrate down to New Jersey this time of year to spend their winters here.  For the songbirds they typically arrive in mixed flocks, and as long as there is food, they will remain through April or early May before returning to their northern breeding grounds.

FUN FACT:  Dark-eyed Juncos belong to the family Passerellidae (New World sparrows), making them true sparrows.
