A piebald white-tailed deer fawn has been seen regularly at MCR over the past 2 weeks. Piebald deer are deer that have blotches of white coloration on portions of their hide that are usually dark in color. Less than 2 percent of white-tail deer are affected with piebaldism. Piebaldism is a recessive gene trait; it is believed that both parents must carry the recessive gene for there to be a chance that they will produce piebald fawns. In addition to this coloration, many piebald deer have some of the following observable conditions: bowing of the nose (Roman nose), short legs, arching spine (scoliosis), and short lower jaws. FYI – Albino deer are deer that lack pigmentation and have a completely white hide and pink eyes, nose and hooves.
