Merrill Creek Reservoir would like to thank and congratulate Michael Cole of BSA Troop 175 of Port Murray for his hard work and dedication to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout! Michael’s Eagle Scout project involved him building a Bat Roosting structure. This specially designed structure can be seen from the Blue Trail in the open meadow near the shoreline of Quarry Point at MCR.

As natural roosting structures are lost or are used by other animals, a man-made bat roosting structure, like the one Michael constructed, is crucial for bats; as they offer safe, warm, and dry environments for roosting, maternity colonies, and in some cases hibernation. These structures also assist with protection against predators and extreme weather conditions and help support the overall survival of various bat species.

Congratulations Michael on your achievement, and a big thank you to you and your fellow scouts and the parents and scout leaders that helped with the project. You all set a great example of being conscientious environmental stewards for bat species that make MCR special! Great Job!
